‘The Newsroom’: Bold, Intelligent and Funny

The-NewsroomThere are a lot of bold TV shows out there that like to kill your favorite characters off and assume you will keep watching, but are there many TV shows that start out saying that America is not the greatest country in the world? I don’t think so, but ‘The Newsroom’ does just that.

There is a lot wrong with American news broadcasts. Not saying that there are not some that do the news right, because there are. The problem with news broadcasts is they are all concerned about the ratings and not the news. Everything is business and it’s all about making the money, but news shouldn’t be like that. This is where ‘The Newsroom’ comes in. MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer, ‘Shutter Island’) is the producer that comes in to make News Night into a show that actually shows the news. Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels, ‘Dumb and Dumber’) is the face of News Night and is the one who said America is not the greatest country in the world anymore. Together they will produce a news show that will inform the electorate.

The show is very smart and funny. The news that the characters show is real news and it makes fans wonder how News Night will handle current events that are happening. They cover the oil spill, the crisis in Egypt, the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords and so much more.

There are so many great intelligent characters, but my favorites are Sloan Sabbith (Olivia Munn, ‘Deliver Us From Evil’), Jim Harper (John Gallagher Jr., ‘Pieces of April’) and Maggie Jordan (Alison Pill, ‘Midnight in Paris’). I love Sloan because she’s a smart and sexy woman and lets face it it’s always great to have this kind of woman on screen. It’s great for woman to look up to. She also doesn’t have a clue about relationships, but she keeps giving relationship advice and it back fires so many times. I love Jim because he’s such a hard worker and has a good heart. He’s also very goofy. We get introduced to him as he’s tripping over a suitcase. Maggie is also a hard worker and she’s working her way up. She doesn’t always get it right, but she keeps trying. She’s in a bad relationship and she just keeps going back to the guy. He’s a nice guy, but not the guy for her. She doesn’t let her guy dictate her career though.

The characters are all funny and all have their own problems, but they come to work and tell the news.

Season one was absolutely amazing and now is the time to get hooked on this show before the final season airs in the fall.
